Evaluate existing student videos

This video has many good angles and  different shot types  that shows the good use of camera   editing skills that they have  makes the video flow well and make it more interesting  because they use a different types of editing such fast pace shots slow motion and a variety of different editing skills  , this would of helped them to hit they higher end of the grade boundary .they also use a range of different settings and scenes that shows the thought they have put into the video and shows us they planned well before filming and had a clear idea of the scenes and images that they wanted to create, this will ensure that when comes to making our music video I will ensure that we plan in detail to ensure we know and get exactly what we want . the use of costumes are good sticking to the typical codes and conventions of this type of music video that is good but makes them all to common the videos become so alike and are similar to videos that I have seen before and it does not stand out as an original music and can become to typical and boring.

So I feel that this video would have been more affective if  the video was more original and created there own ideas rather than using ideas typically used in videos making it more original. its also been recognisable to me that a common convention of these type of music videos such as  hip-hop R&B show very proactive clothing and provocative way of acting this is very recognisable    in many video you see I feel that s a young girl she should not have conformed to these conventions she should of challenged them she has more likely used this style because this is what she I used to seeing and associates this with  good music video but its not the case and her video would have stood out to me more if I was not like every other recent video that I have seen and it challenged the conventions.






The fact that this video  used  of lip-syncing in this video is good and its well done the words our clear and its done well but they do not benefit the lip syncing and don't make it as good as they could have they look board no expression in there face just simply saying the words if you listen to the song the words have powerfully meaning and they do not show this through the song the lyrics of this song suggest that they are angry but they do not show this I think this affect the video and don't make it as successful as it could be.

This also shows that using a common song is hard and the Saturdays are very well know to many and the image that they create is easily recognisable and is the same image that they have used almost as if they have just recreated the Saturdays video and image showing that none of there ideas are very original and just copied from the videos that they have probably researched to improve this video it would have been better to used a unknown song that will allow you to think more about the video coming up with more original ideas making it there own.

Andrew Goodwin theory applied to video

I chosen a random video to test Andrews Goodwin's theory to see how many of his six features would appear in this video I found that not all of the six appeared but many of them did so it shows that many music videos still follow these six feature but not all of them are needed to make a successful just using some of these also works to create a successful music video.

This was part of our research into music video  we where to look at the different budgets and popularity of music video not just recent video these e where videos from over time. The most expensive music video was thriller this is a  significant video for many people as many still remember it today is the price spent on this video shows the importance of videos, the official video is just over 13 minutes long , from doing this info graphics has lead me to see that we really are moving away from music videos although we still are able to have become lees important compared to the amount of effort that would have gone in to make that video  and how different it is to any video we have seen where as many music video today are very similar in there way of nice cars big houses provocative woman no videos are now original there all similar in some way.

To what extent do pop stars influence there fans

From my own personal  opinion looking at the influence that pop stars have on  me I did not  feel like  they do have a strong influence  over any view opinions and ideas that I have , but from looking at the one direction documentary about there fans I found my self very surprised  and from this my opinion has completely changed, stars have such a strong influence over there fans that it is rather scary, they are able to  know everything about there stars from where they are to where there sleeping to what they just had for dinner things not even relevant to them they should be idolized because of what they do and the songs they sing but its no longer about just that the interest of there personal life and many other things . They have become   more like stalkers than fans waiting round every Conner just to get a glimmer of the  stars willing to do anything to get what they want, and although they may have not realised it the stars them self have created this .    

One thing that was surprising for me is the fact that a one direction fan happily explained to us that she only got braces because Neil from one direction had them.

 She doesn’t actually need them. the fact she just got them because he did is crazy considering the price to get them ranges from about £3000 pound this is proof of the influence the stars have if that was her friend with braces she would have no interest many people get bullied for them “brace face” but because a star has them makes them expectable this gives a clear example a star can change a hold and influence a persons view.   

Stars have this strong influence over the idea of what is perfect or what is normal , how we should dress look weight  our height how we should act they create this image of perfection.

what all young girls young boys what to be and look like or look for in people if you don’t look like what we see in magazines your not what we want to see , for example the one direction boys have created this image of them self’s that every girl loves as they have said its perfect this influences the idea  of what all boys should be like, they have been given this  image of perfection and not many people will match this idea creating problems with other relationships they are looking for what does not exist because of the influence and the ideas that the stars have created,  like many of the girls in the documentary  have said they have never had a boyfriend not that this is a problem but is it because the influence and idea of perfection that the one direction boys have created  which  they have in mind  and that they are unable to find ?

The things they do are strongly influenced by there stars as they do things to gain acknowledgement posting things on twitter for them in the case of one direction some have said they have tweeted them more then 100 hundred times a day in order to just get noticed from that to getting tattoos to other extents that I found disturbing “i will kill my dog if you don’t follow me “

this shows the extend of the power and influence these stars have over there fans to do some thing that crazy for a star . not just what they do for them they day that they would do any thing that the star ask on girl tells us she would chop of her arm if one of them asked her two people can live with just one arm this shows the powerful view that these people have of the stars and the even more powerful influence that these stars have over there fans to make them be able to do these things and although these are quite  eccentric and probably wouldn’t happen many just  talk it still shows the influence they have for the thought of this to happen and the fact that they would be willing to do this

They claim the stars make there identity, I have seen that they are behind many things the stars do and it’s clear that there is a strong influence over them in order form them to take part in theses crazy activities .

Depth video analysis

The song that I have chosen is Katy Perry the one that got away I think this is a really good video to analyse. 

This is a mid tempo pop ballade with a video that has a strong narrative that tells the audience a story of a love that has got away  but it’s not necessarily   all that we think when first listening to the song you imagine just a brake up but from the video you are able to see that the male character her partner actually passed away  the lyrics represents what we our seining on screen, we see this throw the video flashing from past to present allowing the past explaining to us how she feels now, there is strong emotion and allows the audience to feel this emotion. 
We can see Goodwin’s theory  states that there our 6 things that a music video should have these are relationship between the lyrics and the visual ,relationship between the music and the video ,genre icons and styles, close up of artist , voyeurism  ,iconography 
Although not all six of these are shown in this video here with in this video as we can see the relationship between the music and the video the slow cuts and movements in the video match up and create a relationship with the slow tempo of the music. We are also able to see close ups of the star.
we are able to see todorov theory he suggest that most narratives start with a state of equilibrium I which life is normal this is clear inn this video they begin happy we see a normal couple having fun enjoying them as the advance we are able to see the happiness that they share then like the narrative theory suggest that there is a disruption in the video we see them arguing this is a contrast to the happens we have seen previously and shows disruption, the next part of the theory is the recognition of the disruption both of them show sadness for the fact that they are no longer together this is made clear in the video with her crying, the next step is attempt to repair  the disruption in this case she goes to visit the place where he lost his life but we see her and she still remains sad so there is no new equilibrium that I am made aware of.
Richard dyers star theory is relevant when looking at this video his theory shows stars as a construct they are artificial images even if they are represented as being real people showing real emotion, Katie Perry faces a brake up during this video and a lose we see that she is affected buy this showing her emotions tears and sadness we relate to this and feel dory for her but this is an act its a video and although we see her expressing real emotion she is still just a construct.
We are able to see Levi strouts theory in this video and the use of binary opposites we are able to see these within this video we have old and young this shows the conflict between the two she was happy when she was younger   the difference between happy and sad and wee see the light and dark in shots of where when she was younger everything’s very bright now many of the scenes are dark black and white

Narrative Theory Notes

This uses  todorovs narrative theory the fact that every narrative starts with a state of equilibrium where everything normal and protagonist  is happy then the normality is distributed by an out side force . This narrative theory is shown in this video

we start with the equilibrium of the group ridding there bikes.
the disruption happens one of the members gets hit by the bike
we see the man is crying this is the recognition of the disruption
there is then an attempt to repair the disruption by trying to learn how to ride again
new equilibrium he is able to ride the bike again

This is  sequence that will be shown in many narrative videos they will include an equilibrium and the recognition , but they may not always follow this chronological order as the story may lay out differently but todorovs theory will be recognisable in most narrative videos

Purpose of music videos

Promotion
The  main purpose of a music video is to sell weather it the album or the performer themselves but the aim is to got them noticed. producers have many ways of promoting through videos from looking through many videos I feel that the man use of promotion is through there attractiveness as a selling point as this is seen in many videos so in both circumstances weather the film stars  a man or a woman its more likely to sell them to both promoting to a larger audience. we see this is videos such as :

Synergy
This is when two company's come together to make a music video,  the record label would join together with another company to make there video. how this works is that the other company will pay money for there product to be shown within the video , the money given will help pay for the video to be made , the aim of this is to provide the product with a larger number of viewers more people are likely to see it the product will gain a larger audience in hope that this will raise sales. we can see this in Ellie gouldings music video where there are clear shots of the mini that she is driving so its made clear to the audience of the  make then a close up of the "mini" logo to make it clear for the audience to see, this is done in many videos to make sure there products are visible to a wide rage of viewers even people that may have not been interested in these products before.    

  

Extension of income
music videos allow the success of an album to grow an make more money as so many people can show these videos any time they are played on a music show for example they will have to pay to play that video this  will rapidly increase the amount they make for the single, the artist them self will also gain a percentage of this income.

Producers strategies
music videos are not created around the idea of the song but many music industry's have there own visual  image of how they would like the music video to be.

Structures of music video

Narrative:
You have a narrative music video this will tell the audience a short story following this story line through out the video.

This is an example of a narrative music video

We can see this as there is a clear story that runs through out this video showing  relation to the lyrics of the song, for example the lyrics say "maybe ill get drunk again" he is sitting in the pub/club drinking. This is a convention of many narrative videos a clear link can be mad from what your seeing in the video and what your hearing through the song.



Performance
A performance style video will show the band/artist performing through out the video


We see Beyoncé performing through out this video through the dance and singing that is show in this video this is an example of a performance video. Many artist use the style of performance video some of them will  perform on stage where you will also see clips of the audience these could be set up for the purpose of the video, but some artist use clips and videos from gigs that they have previously played or performances that they have previously done. I think this is a good style of video gets the audience involved make them feel like they are there I also believe this is a form of advertisement for the artist gigs and performances from seeing the video you may want to attend the next one.



Abstract video


This is an abstract music video for Kate Nash this video shows a variety of different techniques with stop motion and a range of shots through out that emphasise what she is saying the concepts of the video match the song lyrics  for example "you said I must eat so many lemons" to match this shot she is sat there with a pile of lemon skins this is shown through out the video in many different ways which I think are very clever for example when the song say "you got aggressive" there having an arm wrestle I think this makes the video interesting and more enjoyable to watch.

This consist of abstract and performance and I feel there is an element of narrative as the video almost tells a story. I like the way the video switches between  the performance and abstract I feel engages you more in the video as there is such a difference in the two and every shot in the video is very different through out so you are always seeing something new making the video more interesting and the audience curious of what could happen next. I think that this video is very creative but is so simple with the Varity of shot used.

 we all have our own taste in music and each person will like something much different from the next considering for the next couple of months we will be working in groups to create  our own music video it would be good to get a taste and an idea of the type of music and music videos that other members like this will make thing much easier when it come to creating a music video together, it may even provide inspiration because its a music video you have not watched before so  As part of our home work we where told to create a presentation on a music video and explain why we liked it and this is mine .

Summer homework-music video

As part of our summer home work we where told to make our own music video in preparation for the year ahead, with limited equipment at home I filmed this on my phone then uploaded it to movie maker where I was able to edited  it and upload my chosen sound track. I really enjoyed this task the planning and the filming  has gave me so many ideas for the planning of our final music video. This task was a lot harder  than I first thought , planning has to be exact to make sure when it comes to the  edit it matches with the  beat and the video flows well with the music. Although we did plan when came to editing not every scene did fit we had a lip syncing scene that is not in my final video as we did not time it the best that we could and we where unable to make it fit with in the music but this will be something that over the next few weeks I will understand how to do better. This task has allowed me to get a better understanding of making a music video and has prepared me for the year ahead.

welcome to my A2 media blog as part of this year we will be studying music videos and as part of our course re-creating our own  music video ,  this blog will diary my work on the upcoming months to production looking at my research then through to my planning , all the work that has been carried out up our final music video..
